Product Details

The Plague Doctor Mask is not a costume accessory. It is a handcrafted leather object built to the same standard as any serious leatherwork — cut, stitched, and finished entirely by hand in Romania by ATOM LEATHER. Made from top-quality Italian vegetable-tanned leather with polarized polycarbonate lenses and solid metal hardware. Built to be worn, displayed, and kept for life.

Every Plague Doctor Mask begins as a flat piece of Italian leather and ends as a wearable sculpture. The leather is cut by hand, shaped around a form, and stitched with waxed thread from the pointed tip of the beak to the curved edges of the face frame. The lenses are set from original polycarbonate sunglasses — polarized, clear, and built to stay in place under wear.

The result is something that sits between artifact and accessory — precise enough to wear, striking enough to display, and made well enough to keep for decades.

What leather is used?

Top-quality Italian vegetable-tanned leather. It is light, durable, and develops a subtle patina over time. Not chrome-tanned, not bonded leather — full Italian veg-tan, the same material used in high-end leather goods.

Will it fit my head?

Yes. The mask has an adjustable leather headband with a metal buckle at the back, designed to fit most adults and teenagers. For custom sizes — including children — contact us before ordering and we will make it to your measurements.

Can I actually breathe in it?

Yes. The beak has ventilation holes along its length specifically to allow airflow during extended wear. It is designed to be worn, not just displayed.

What are the lenses made of?

Polarized polycarbonate lenses sourced from original sunglasses. They are set into the eye frames by hand and provide a clear, protective finish that photographs beautifully and wears comfortably.

Is it entirely handmade?

Yes, from the first cut to the final stitch. Every mask is made one at a time in our workshop in Romania — no molds, no machine stitching, no shortcuts.

How do I store it?

Store flat or on a display stand, away from direct sunlight and humidity. The leather will last a lifetime if kept dry and occasionally conditioned with a natural leather balm.

Can I order a custom size or color?

Yes. Contact us before placing your order and we can accommodate custom head sizes, including for children, and discuss color or lens options. We are happy to make it exactly as you need it.

Each mask is unique. Minor variations in leather grain and finish are inherent to handmade work — not defects. Custom sizes available on request.
