A Wearable Leather Sculpture Inspired by the Hammerhead Shark

Hand-dyed, hand-pyrographed and hand-stitched from vegetable-tanned leather, the Hammerhead Shark Leather Crossbody Bag transforms one of the ocean's most distinctive silhouettes into a functional piece of wearable sculpture.

The shark is not applied to the bag. The shark is the bag.

Its three-dimensional construction recreates the characteristic hammer-shaped head, sculpted body, dorsal and side fins, elongated form and forked tail.

Fine flowing lines are individually burned into the leather by hand using pyrography, creating an organic surface that follows the contours of the shark. Contrasting turquoise stitching traces the construction lines against the dark, hand-dyed leather.

A zipper integrated into the body opens into the interior compartment, while an adjustable and detachable leather strap allows the piece to be worn over the shoulder or crossbody.

Each bag is individually cut, shaped, lined, dyed, pyrographed, hand-stitched and finished by Vasile and Pavel Vasilache in the Atom Leather atelier in Bucharest, Romania.

The Shark Is the Bag

Sculptural Three-Dimensional Construction

This is not a conventional handbag decorated with a shark motif.

The hammerhead shark itself forms the structure of the bag.

Individual leather components are shaped and assembled to create its recognizable anatomy:

  • Wide hammer-shaped head
  • Sculpted three-dimensional body
  • Prominent dorsal fin
  • Dimensional side fins
  • Secondary fins
  • Long tapered body
  • Forked tail

The construction allows the silhouette to remain recognizable from multiple angles and gives the piece a sculptural presence even when it is not being worn.

Hand-Dyed Leather

The dark finish is created individually by hand in the Atom Leather atelier.

Rather than using a completely uniform industrial surface treatment, the vegetable-tanned leather is dyed by hand, allowing subtle tonal variations and the natural character of the leather to remain visible.

The result is a dark surface with depth and variation rather than a flat mechanical finish.

Hand-Pyrographed Surface

Every Line Is Burned into the Leather by Hand

One of the defining features of the Hammerhead Shark Bag is the flowing linear texture covering its surface.

Every line is individually pyrographed into the leather by hand using heat.

The texture is not printed and is not machine embossed.

The lines follow the direction, volume and curves of the shark, emphasizing its three-dimensional anatomy while creating an organic, almost skin-like surface.

Because the pyrography is created manually, no two bags will have an absolutely identical line pattern.

Hand-Stitched Construction

Turquoise waxed thread follows the seams, fins and outer contours of the shark.

Rather than concealing the construction, the stitching is intentionally visible and becomes part of the visual language of the object.

Functional Interior

Zippered Main Compartment

A 10.2 in / 26 cm zipper integrated into the body of the shark provides access to the main compartment.

The interior is designed for smaller everyday essentials such as:

  • Phone
  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Cards
  • Sunglasses
  • Earbuds
  • Compact cosmetics
  • Small personal accessories

Because the interior follows the sculptural anatomy of the shark rather than the geometry of a conventional rectangular handbag, its usable storage space is intentionally unconventional.

Please compare the dimensions with the objects you intend to carry.

Adjustable Crossbody Strap

The shoulder strap is made from approximately 7 oz / 2.8 mm vegetable-tanned leather.

Its adjustable construction allows the bag to be worn over the shoulder or crossbody.

The strap attaches using metal swivel hooks and can be removed entirely, allowing the shark to be displayed as a standalone sculptural leather object when it is not being worn.

Dimensions

  • Height: 17 in / 43 cm
  • Width: 13.4 in / 34 cm
  • Depth: 5.1 in / 13 cm

Measurements refer to the overall sculptural form.

Because every bag is individually shaped and assembled by hand, slight dimensional variations may occur.

Materials & Construction

Main Body

The body is made from approximately 3.5 oz / 1.4 mm vegetable-tanned leather and lined with approximately 1.5 oz / 0.6 mm pigskin leather.

Approximately 7–8 sq ft / 0.7 m² of leather is used for the main body construction.

Shoulder Strap

The strap is made from approximately 7 oz / 2.8 mm vegetable-tanned leather for additional strength and stability.

Stitching & Finish

The construction includes:

  • 0.04 in / 1 mm waxed thread
  • Leather dye
  • Edge dye
  • Leather adhesive
  • Hand-finished edges
  • Hand-applied pyrography

Hardware

The bag incorporates:

  • One 10.2 in / 26 cm zipper
  • Three ¾ in / 20 mm D-rings
  • Two 1 in / 25 mm swivel hooks
  • One 1 in / 25 mm adjustable buckle

Minor variations in hardware shape or finish may occur depending on availability while maintaining the same function and overall character.

Wearable Art

The Hammerhead Shark Bag was designed to exist somewhere between leathercraft, fashion and sculpture.

Its unusual proportions and three-dimensional construction make it an immediate focal point when worn.

It can function as a:

  • Crossbody bag
  • Shoulder bag
  • Statement accessory
  • Wearable art piece
  • Collectible leather object
  • Sculptural display piece

When the shoulder strap is removed, the shark can also be displayed independently as a leather object.

About Atom Leather

Contemporary Leathercraft from Bucharest

Atom Leather is the father-and-son atelier of Vasile and Pavel Vasilache, based in Bucharest, Romania.

Our work combines traditional leathercraft with experimental pattern making, sculptural construction, hand dyeing, pyrography and contemporary design.

Atom Leather is featured in the Homo Faber Guide.

Leather masks created in our atelier have also been featured twice in the print edition of Dazed magazine.

These recognitions reflect our approach to leather not simply as a material for conventional accessories, but as a medium for creating functional, sculptural and wearable objects.

Every Hammerhead Shark Bag is individually cut, shaped, lined, dyed, pyrographed, hand-stitched and finished in our Bucharest workshop.

Natural Variations

Vegetable-tanned leather is a natural material.

Grain patterns, small markings and subtle variations in color and texture will differ from one piece to another.

Because the leather is dyed by hand and every line is pyrographed individually, variations in tone and line placement are inherent to the process.

Small differences in shaping, stitching and surface appearance are part of the handmade character of the object and are not considered defects.

With use, vegetable-tanned leather may gradually soften, deepen in tone and develop a patina influenced by handling and wear.

Care

How to Care for Your Bag

  • Remove dust with a clean, soft and dry cloth.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water and high humidity.
  • If the leather becomes wet, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature.
  • Keep away from radiators, heaters and other direct heat sources.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight.
  • Do not use alcohol, household cleaners, wet wipes or harsh chemicals.
  • Use only care products suitable for vegetable-tanned leather.
  • Test any leather-care product on a small, less-visible area first.
  • Do not crush or fold the head, fins or tail during storage.
  • Store the bag with enough space around it to preserve its three-dimensional form.
