Hieronymus is a hand-built, hand-dyed black leather mask inspired by the strange, densely imagined world of Hieronymus Bosch. Sculptural in profile and precise in construction, it is made in our Bucharest atelier from Italian vegetable-tanned leather, polarized polycarbonate lenses, and solid brass hardware.

Each mask is cut, formed, dyed, saddle-stitched, and finished by hand, one at a time. Designed to be worn, displayed, and kept.

The Object

Named after Hieronymus Bosch, the mask draws on the unsettling beauty and improbable creatures that inhabit his paintings. Rather than reproducing a historical object, we approached the familiar plague-doctor silhouette as a piece of leatherwork: architectural, tactile, and intentionally strange.

The elongated beak, curved face frame, dark lenses, hand-dyed black leather, and warm brass fittings give Hieronymus a strong presence from every angle, with subtle echoes of gothic, steampunk, and dark-art aesthetics. It sits somewhere between accessory and artifact, functional enough to wear, considered enough to display.

Made by Hand

Hieronymus begins as flat sheets of Italian vegetable-tanned leather. Each component is cut and shaped by hand, then dyed black by hand before the structure is assembled and saddle-stitched with waxed thread.

Because the color is applied by hand rather than produced as a perfectly uniform industrial finish, subtle variations in tone and surface may appear from one mask to another. These differences are part of the character of the leather and make each piece individual.

The stitching follows the form from the tip of the beak to the curved edges of the face frame, becoming part of the design rather than something to hide. Polarized polycarbonate lenses are individually set into the eye frames, while solid brass rivets, buckles, and fittings complete the construction.

The result is a substantial object made through traditional leatherworking techniques, without machine stitching.

Fit & Wear

Adjustable leather straps at the back allow the mask to fit most adult head sizes. Ventilation openings along the beak provide airflow while worn.

Material & Character

Vegetable-tanned leather is a natural material that changes gradually with handling and age. The black color is applied by hand, allowing the grain and natural character of the hide to remain visible rather than covering it beneath a uniform surface coating.

Subtle differences in grain, tone, and finish are therefore expected and make every Hieronymus slightly different. With proper care, the leather will continue to develop character and a natural patina over time.

Each Hieronymus mask is made to order in our Bucharest workshop. Please allow 5–7 business days for production before your order is dispatched.

All orders are shipped with tracking. You will receive tracking information once your mask has been dispatched.

Care

Store the mask in a dry place, away from prolonged direct sunlight and humidity. When needed, condition the leather sparingly with a suitable natural leather balm. For display, support the mask so the leather keeps its intended shape.
