Paracelsus Black Plague Doctor Mask
Product Details
Paracelsus is a hand-built, hand-dyed black leather plague doctor mask defined by its compact beak, dark round lenses, and close-fitting sculptural profile. Made in our Bucharest atelier from Italian vegetable-tanned leather, polarized polycarbonate lenses, and solid metal hardware, it is a smaller, more restrained interpretation of the traditional plague doctor silhouette.
Every mask is cut, shaped, dyed, saddle-stitched, and finished by hand, one at a time. Built to be worn. Made well enough to keep.

The Object
Paracelsus takes the familiar plague doctor mask and reduces it to a tighter, more compact form.
The shorter beak changes the character of the silhouette completely. Seen from the side, it is sharp and architectural without the exaggerated length of a traditional plague mask. From the front, the round dark lenses, raised central seam, and curved leather panels give it an almost mechanical expression.
The design is deliberately restrained. There are no decorative parts added simply for effect. The shape comes from the leather itself: the way it is formed over the face, the visible saddle stitching, the circular eye frames, and the line of the beak.
The result feels less like a costume reproduction and more like an object from an imagined medical cabinet, familiar at first glance, stranger the longer you look at it.
Made by Hand
The individual panels are cut by hand, then dyed black before assembly. The mask is formed into its final structure and saddle-stitched with waxed thread, following the contours around the eyes, across the face, and along the beak.
The black finish is applied by hand rather than produced as a perfectly uniform industrial coating. Depending on the hide and the way it takes the dye, areas of the leather may show subtle variations in depth, warmer undertones, or traces of the natural grain.
We leave those differences visible.
The round polycarbonate lenses are fitted individually into stitched leather frames, while the rear leather strap is adjusted with a metal buckle. Small ventilation openings beneath the beak allow airflow while the mask is worn.
There is no machine stitching. Each mask is assembled and finished individually in our workshop.
Fit & Wear
Paracelsus is designed to be worn as well as displayed.
An adjustable leather strap at the back allows the mask to fit most adult head sizes, while the shorter beak keeps the profile compact. Ventilation openings beneath the beak provide airflow during wear.
For a specific head size or a closer custom fit, we can make the mask to your measurements. Please contact us before ordering so we can discuss the sizing with you.
Material & Character
The Paracelsus mask is made from vegetable tanned leather. The surface carries the natural grain of the hide, and because each Paracelsus mask is dyed and finished by hand, no two pieces will be completely identical. You may see small variations in grain, black tone, edge finish, or the way the dye settles into the leather.
With handling and time, the leather will continue to change subtly and develop its own patina.

Care
Keep the mask in a dry place away from prolonged direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat.
Dust can be removed with a soft dry cloth. If the leather becomes dry over time, use a small amount of conditioner suitable for vegetable-tanned leather.
When displaying the mask, support it naturally rather than flattening or compressing the formed leather.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is every Paracelsus mask identical?
No. Each mask is cut, dyed, stitched, and finished individually. Natural grain and small variations in color and finish are part of the leather and make every piece slightly different.
Can the mask actually be worn?
Yes. Paracelsus is made as a wearable mask, with an adjustable leather strap, polycarbonate lenses, and ventilation openings beneath the beak. It can also be kept purely as a display or collection piece.
What is the difference between Paracelsus and a traditional long-beak plague doctor mask?
The most visible difference is the proportion. Paracelsus uses a much shorter, more compact beak, giving the mask a tighter profile and a different expression while retaining the recognizable plague doctor construction.
Can I order a custom size?
Yes. Custom sizing is available on request. Please contact us before ordering and send us your measurements so we can discuss the fit.
Is the leather really dyed by hand?
Yes. The black finish is applied by hand in our workshop. Because leather absorbs dye differently from hide to hide, slight variations in tone and surface are expected.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Production takes approximately 5–7 business days. After dispatch, estimated transit time is approximately 10-14 days to the United States, 10–14 days to Europe and 20-30 days the rest of the world.
Where is it made?
Every Paracelsus mask is handcrafted one at a time by Vasile and Pavel Vasilache in the ATOM LEATHER workshop in Bucharest, Romania.
